"On that odious day, I was in a tenth-floor apartment in Silver Spring, Maryland,
from which we saw smoke rising across the Potomac River all day.
"While other composers fell silent or wrote laments on that occasion,
I wrote a tragic march in honor of the firefighters, police, and volunteers
who placed themselves in harm's way in a desparate attempt to save lives."
